The First Presbyterian Church of Honesdale was organized on
February 11, 1829, in the area originally known as Dyberry Forks. Work
on the Delaware & Hudson Railroad and Canal brought hundreds of
people to the area. Many of them were religious people who met in a
building known as The Tabernacle. It was in this building that our
church was organized by The Reverend Mr. Joel Campbell with five
men and four women as members. From the original nine, the
membership increased to 125 and a larger meeting place was needed.
Our first sanctuary was a wooden building constructed in 1836 on land
and in 1848-49 the church building was enlarged and a lecture room
was added on the north side. The original building faced Church
Street. The present brick building was dedicated in 1868. The chapel
was built in 1891 and the new manse in 1898.
With only thirteen pastors in more than 175 years, the Presbyterian
Church continues to have an impact in Honesdale, the surrounding
area and abroad.
